Publication of research data

The following is a summary of information you should be aware of when releasing your research data.

FAIR Principles

The FAIR Data Principles are a set of principles for data publication and sharing, developed based on discussions at FORCE11 in 2014. It is an acronym for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable, and is now widely accepted as principles that indicate the appropriate state of data publication and sharing.

Persistent Identifiers

DOI

A DOI is a permanent identifier given to electronic content on the Internet, and is often used for academic journal articles. The DataCite DOI, which is registered and managed by DataCite, an international DOI Registration Agency, is a DOI assigned to research data. The use of DOIs is expected to avoid broken URL links, guarantee permanent access to data, and at the same time improve international circulation and visibility.
Kyushu University Institutional Repository (QIR) can publish research data with DataCite DOI.

ORCID

ORCID iD is an identifier uniquely assigned to researchers and issued by the international non-profit organization ORCID.
By associating your ORCID iD with your research results, you will not be confused with the work of other researchers with the same name, and you will be accurately recognized even if your affiliation has changed. We strongly recommend that you register your ORCID iD when submitting your paper.

Licenses

When releasing research data to the public, we recommend that you grant a license that clearly states the conditions of use in order to promote the utilization of the data.
One example of a license is the Creative Commons License (CC License). This license is a tool for authors who publish their works to express their intention that “you may freely use my work as long as you observe these conditions,” and is granted to a variety of content distributed on the Internet, including articles and research data. By declaring your intention regarding secondary use in advance, you can benefit from the following advantages.

  • Authors: Can freely distribute their research results while retaining copyrights.
  • Users: Can easily understand the conditions of use without having to inquire about them. Reuse and redistribution is possible within the scope of those conditions.
  • Editors/platformers: Can omit responding to inquiries about reprinting and use.

QIR recommends that a CC license be granted when releasing research data.

Open and Close Strategy

When considering the release of research data, it is important to make strategic decisions about what to release/keep private based on its characteristics. This is called an open and closed strategy. For example, research data that requires legal protection as intellectual property for social implementation of research results and further research promotion may be strategically kept closed.
